Synopsis

Abstract

Fibromyalgia is a chronic, widespread musculoskeletal pain disorder characterized by central sensitization, fatigue, cognitive disturbances, and sleep dysfunction. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), particularly ibuprofen, are among the most frequently self-administered analgesics by fibromyalgia patients, despite limited evidence supporting their efficacy in this condition. This monograph critically evaluates the pharmacological basis, clinical evidence, therapeutic limitations, and current guidelines surrounding the use of ibuprofen in fibromyalgia pain management. The available literature suggests that while ibuprofen may provide modest short-term analgesia, it does not address the central neurological mechanisms underlying fibromyalgia and carries significant gastrointestinal and cardiovascular risks with prolonged use. Clinicians should approach its use cautiously and within a multimodal treatment framework.
